A Conversation with Joey on the Way to the Shrine -- continued

Continued . . .

Grandpa: So, Joey, when you receive Holy Communion

you are eating the Body of Jesus Who is the Lamb of God. Right?

Joey: Yes, Grandpa, that is what the priest says when he raises the Host at Mass. He also says "The Body of Christ" when he gives Communion.

GP: But why does the priest say that Jesus is the Lamb of God. Was jesus a lamb?

J: No, Grandpa. Jesus was not a lamb but He was like a Lamb.

Gp: In what way?

J: Because the Jews killed lambs and other animals as sacrifice.

Gp: Why?

J: Because they wanted to be sorry for their sins.

Gp: What about Jesus?

J: They also put Jesus to death.

Gp: Why did Jesus allow this?

J: Because He wanted to take away the people's sins.

Gp: But why do we eat the Lamb of God? Did the Jews eat the lambs they burned as offering to God?

J: I don't know, Grandpa.

Gp: Yes, they did. What else do you know about lambs in the Bible?

J: The Jews leaving Egypt were asked to kill a lamb and sprinkle its blood on doors of houses so the angel of death would not kill the people in those houses.

Gp: Yes, but only the first born in the family.

J: Oh, okay.

Gp: Did they eat the lamb that was killed to save people in their houses?

J: I think so, Grandpa. They had to eat something before leaving Egypt.

Gp: Yes, it was their last meal in Egypt. Moses, their leader, commanded them to do so.

J: Grandpa, Did Jesus tell us to eat Him as the Lamb of God?

Gp: Good question, Joey. Jesus said that if we eat His flesh and drink His blood, we will have eternal life. He told this many times to the apostles and the people who were listening to His preaching. Do you believe this, Joey?

J: Yes, Grandpa.

Gp: Good, Joey! You're a smart boy! You will learn more as you grow older.

J: Thank you, Grandpa! #

The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us [his] flesh to eat?” Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. (John 6:52-56)
