Miss Universe

November 26, 2018

I was old enough when the first international beauty pageant, Miss Universe, was held in 1952. The first winner, a stunning Finnish beauty, soon married a rich Filipino. Another Miss Universe winner, from Colombia, also married another wealthy Filipino businessman.

The fascination for the Miss Universe title and the prizes, fame and glory it entails attracts many beautiful women worldwide to aspire for the much-coveted title.  The country itself produced three Miss Universe winners of its own so far, making their countrymen proud.

For the name alone, other later beauty pageants like Miss International and Miss World connote less prestige than that of Miss Universe because the universe is obviously much bigger than the world or all the countries of the world combined.

The title Miss Universe makes one think of what the universe really is. My eight-year-old grandson, who likes science a lot, talks about planets, the solar system, galaxies, groups of galaxies, superclusters,  light years, numbers in the billions and trillions, etc. He is always quick to point out that the earth is so tiny in comparison to the numerous stars, and other huge heavenly bodies and groups of them moving with so much order in space.

Once we know more about the vastness of the universe and what are there, we cannot help but have a feeling of awe and wonder about it all. It should also make us truly humble knowing that we who inhabit one of its smallest planets are just tiny specks in it.

Last Sunday's Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe is meant for us to contemplate the infinite power of God who created it. God is much bigger than the universe! The Creator is much bigger than His creation.

At the same time, however, we can also wonder why this Creator of the Universe would find it in His infinite wisdom to take on the form, nature, and  size of His creature, Man, who is small in stature, and practically insignificant in the much, much bigger universe, in effect humbling Himself.

But it is also comforting to know that man is a unique and special creation of God. He made him in His image and likeness. He created him with the purpose of drawing him and bringing him to Himself!

We are all tiny inhabitants of this physical universe. But we are in an incomprehensible way meant to be bigger than it. We are special to the Creator, much more than the planets, the stars, the galaxies and the superclusters!

He should also be special to us. We should love and serve Him with all our minds, with all our hearts, and with all our strength!

Think about it!

And be thankful  . . . to Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe!#

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).

All things were made by him, and without him nothing was made that was made (John 1:3).

For by him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through him and for him (Colossians 1:16).

Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. (Genesis 2:7)
