Conversing with my ten-year-old granddaughter one day, I asked her about school and if she likes going there. She answered that she does and when I asked her why, she said she has good teachers and friendly classmates. I asked her how many friends she has and she replied, many, but I have only one BFF. "What is BFF?" I asked. She replied: "Best Friend Forever."
I myself had one best friend in high school, but when I moved to another place in adulthood, I had another best friend, until I moved again. I guess we develop friendships wherever we may go to settle.
We all need to have friends. According to the Book of Sirach, "Faithful friends are a sturdy shelter, whoever finds one finds a treasure. Faithful friends are beyond price, no amount can balance their worth."
What is a true friend? What is friendship? According to Pope Benedict XVI, friendship is wanting the same things, rejecting the same things. Friendship is a communion of thinking and willing."
The basis of friendship is truth. It does not consist in merely pleasing the friend whatever it takes, and in whatever way. A friend is not one who seeks or satisfies only the other's need for recognition or comfort, or the feeding of the other's ego. It is the willing of the true good of the other, and includes correction of the other, if necessary. True friends are those who are willing to walk together in truth.
"BFFs", Best Friends Forever. Are there in human relationships friendships that last forever?
A sure test of true friendship is the willingness to give his life for his friend. This is true of our Lord Jesus, Who considers us no longer servants but friends: "No one has greater love than this, than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." He laid down His life for us.
Jesus laid down His life for His friends: you and me and all the people who have lived, are living, and will still live in this world. But He tells us that we are His friends only if we do what He commands us to do: and that is, love one another as He loves us.
We can have best friends in this world. But there is only one Perfect Friend, one Best Friend --- the One Who considers us all His friends.
We can have best friends in this world. But there is only one Who is our Best Friend who remains faithful to us Forever. Our BFF. It is the Lord Jesus, the Incarnate Son of God, who came to dwell among us starting from that moment in time two thousand years ago to show us the love and friendship God the Father wanted to manifest to us.
Our Best Friend Forever, Jesus, remains with us, and will stay with us . . . Forever.
No other person on earth can be our best friend forever . . . our BFF.#
